OUR DENOMINATION

THE BIBLE FELLOWSHIP CHURCH

The Bible Fellowship Church, has a rich and actively progressive history dating back to its origins in the mid 1850’s.  Formerly the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, the name changed in 1959 to the Bible Fellowship Church (BFC).  The new name reflects changes that were occurring in the 50’s concerning both theological distinctives and church polity. Today, the BFC is a unique hybrid of reformed theology, Presbyterian Church government and Anabaptist emphasis on believers baptism by immersion.  Its 60 plus churches and missions are committed to the proclamation of the doctrines of God’s saving grace balanced by the faithful spreading of the gospel message to all men.

VALUES & VISION

VALUES
AUTHORITATIVE PREACHING AND TEACHING OF THE BIBLE
We value the expository proclamation of the entire Word of God, believing it to be the supreme and final authority of faith and conduct, and the catalyst for transformation in individual lives.

THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE
We value the gospel of God’s sovereign grace whereby he has graciously chosen a people from among fallen mankind, redeemed them by the blood of Christ, and granted them the gifts of faith and repentance that they might freely love and serve Him, and find in Him true satisfaction.

INSPIRING WORSHIP
We value worship, corporate, family and individual, that both magnifies the triune God and celebrates the salvation He has provided for His people.  We submit our form of corporate worship to that which is prescribed in God’s Word.  We value the faithful celebration of the ordinances (baptism and the Lord’s Supper), for the edification and encouragement of the Church to the glory of God’s Name.

PRAYER
We value prayer, individually and corporately, as a form of worship that approaches our sovereign, heavenly, relational God in: praise and adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication and intercession. We see prayer as foundational and indispensable to the Christian life and service in God’s name. As a church we are committed to encouraging and equipping God’s people to pray diligently and fervently, in faith, submitting in all things to the will of God.

CONTINUOUS SPIRITUAL GROWTH
We value the active individual and corporate pursuit of growing in the knowledge of, and likeness to, the person of Jesus Christ.  We see this growth as coming by grace, through the diligent exercise of spiritual disciplines, and through intentional discipleship resulting in joyful obedience to the commands of Scriptures.

LOVING RELATIONSHIPS
We value the new covenant community established through the blood of Jesus Christ, a community that transcends race, culture, age, and socio-economic barriers.  We value pursuing biblical unity, building strong and lasting relationships, exhorting and encouraging one another, and bearing one another’s burdens, in our shared pursuit of holiness.

GIFT-ORIENTED SERVICE
We value investing our spiritual gifts, talents, and interests in fruitful and fulfilling service to the local body of believers, to the Bible Fellowship Church denomination, and to the Church universal.

WORLD-WIDE WITNESS
We value the proclamation of the gospel, with urgency, compassion and persuasion to all people, to our neighbors, and to every tribe, tongue, and nation.

VISION
BIBLE FOCUSED PREACHING AND TEACHING
We envision a church where the Word of God is honored, exalted and authoritative. We envision a church where preaching and teaching ministries proclaim the whole counsel of God’s Word. We envision a church where the solas1 of the Protestant Reformation are firmly upheld, where redemption through Christ alone is faithfully preached, and where there is also a sincere appeal to individuals to obey God’s Word and to persevere in their faith as is their responsibility.

TRUTH FOCUSED CELEBRATION AND WORSHIP
We envision a church whose worship exalts the triune God and celebrates the wonders of our salvation. We envision a church that corporately worships God in a worthy manner and in a contextually relevant way, through the reading and faithful proclamation of God’s Word, praying fervently, presenting music centered on the truth, giving financial gifts, and celebrating the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.  We envision a church where worship is not contained to the sanctuary, but affects every aspect of the believer’s life.

GROWTH FOCUSED DISCIPLESHIP
We envision a church where people of all ages and levels of spiritual maturity are taught God’s Word, loved, encouraged, and exhorted by shepherding elders and through one on one, small group and corporate discipleship. As gospel truths are taught and believed, we expect people to be changed radically and the whole body to be built-up and, growing in love, service, holiness and Christ-likeness.

LOVE FOCUSED RELATIONSHIPS
We envision a counter-cultural community where joy and acceptance, affirmation and encouragement, sacrificial love and giving, forbearance and grace, and confessing sins one to another are the norm. We envision a church where individuals strive to resolve conflict biblically and to God’s glory.  We envision a diverse body, where individuals, regardless of ethnicity, age, sex, or socio-economic background can be united in the gospel and find God-exalting fellowship.  We envision a church where deepening relationships are sought after, and where God-honoring marital and family relationships are pursued.

GIFT FOCUSED SERVICE
We envision a church which helps its youth and adults discover and develop their spiritual gifts and guides them into a fruitful and fulfilling place of ministry within and/or outside our local body. We envision a church where empowering leadership equips, supports, and entrusts individuals, that they might pursue vital ministry in the body.

EVANGELISM FOCUSED WITNESS
We envision a church where every member is trained in and committed to biblical, relational evangelism, where outreach is promoted from the pulpit, in our Sunday School, in our small groups, and carried out through periodic events. We envision a people burdened to reach the lost in our community, and boldly bearing witness to Christ.

We envision being a church that seeks to spread the gospel through planting churches. We envision reaching the greater Steelton/Harrisburg area through growing neighborhood churches that transform the communities around them.

We envision a church which recruits, equips, sends out and supports missionaries, church planters, and pastors.
